Jose Benerito (Benny) Atencio, 87, of Bloomfield, New Mexico passed away Saturday, October 13, 2018 at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington. He had been battling cancer and other health issues at the time of his death. Benny was born in Angustura, New Mexico on February 22, 1931 to Alex and Lucy Atencio.
Benny is survived by his children: Don Atencio of Farmington, New Mexico and his son Loren Atencio of Farmington, New Mexico ; Manuel and Clealus Atencio of Owasso, Oklahoma and their children Amanda and Aaron Atencio; Ruben and Tammy Atencio of Harlingen, Texas and their children Daysha Wells and husband Justin; Zachary Atencio; Rebecca Hale and husband Mark of Woodbridge, Virginia and their children Morgan, Matthew and Sadie Hale. Also surviving are sisters, Patsy Chavez and husband Abe of Navajo Dam; Rose Trujillo and husband Leonard of Blanco. Sisters In-laws Nora Atencio, Pauline Atencio, Angie Serrano,
Benny is preceded in death by his father, Alex; mother, Lucy Atencio; deceased wife Timmy Atencio; ex-wife Polly Atencio; Brother, Ray Atencio; Brother Leo Atencio; Brother Rubel Atencio.
Benny was an US Army Corporal and combat veteran and served his country in Korea where he was awarded two bronze stars and the united nations service medal and was honorably discharged in 1953. After completing his military service Benny worked on the construction of Navajo Dam Reservoir, Cutter Dam and worked may years as a union carpenter at several local electrical power plants before retiring in the late 1990s. He loved and enjoyed time with family and friends. He also loved to watch and play the race horses.
